Information for Physiotherapists

The Australian Physiotherapy Council is responsible for the assessment of overseas Physiotherapy qualifications. Its contact details are:

Australian Physiotherapy Council
GPO Box 587
Canberra  ACT  2601

Phone:  (02) 62626029
Fax:  (02) 6262 5284
Email: enquiries@physiocouncil.com.au
Web:  www.physiocouncil.com.au

A Physiotherapist who has obtained their qualifications overseas may apply to the Council to become eligible for Australian registration. The assessment process consists of three stages – eligibility assessment, written examination and clinical examination; and each stage must be successfully completed before the next is attempted.

The eligibility assessment and written examination can be done outside Australia, however the clinical examination can only be held in Australia.

The eligibility assessment will include an English test if your first language is not English.

If you are a Physiotherapist who is qualified in Physiotherapy from the Republic of Ireland prior to 2003; or qualified in Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa and United Kingdom prior to 2001 you may be eligible for Temporary Registration for a twelve month period without sitting for the clinical examination.

This may also apply to Physiotherapists who have specified qualifications and experience, who are currently registered or licensed in their country of training, and who can provide professional referees. There are a variety of eligibility requirements and conditions for Temporary Registration
