Nelson Bay is a town of about 4500 people on the Tomaree Peninsula. It is 60km from Newcastle and 207km from Sydney. Nelson Bay to Newcastle takes about an hour and when driving from Sydney it can take up to 3 hours depending on traffic.

There are several other communities on the Tomaree Peninsula and these include Shoal Bay, Fingal Bay, and Salamander Bay. The total population is the region is about 22,000 and this increases during the summer holiday months.

More than 85% of the local population reside in towns and suburbs around the southern shores of the area, in close proximity to the health service.

Tourism activities include dolphin and whale watching, surfing, golf, boating, diving, fishing, bush walking and nature.  Around the town there are many nice cafes and restaurants, and some popular bars.

Role:

You will provide medical services to the Emergency Department and to the inpatients at Tomaree Community Hospital.  The doctor will be expected to admit and manage the patients that can reasonably be managed at the facility and refer on any patients that are outside scope of the facility to manage safely.  The doctor will be expected to treat patients in the Emergency Department and refer on to larger facilities if appropriate.

To attend GP patients (usually triage category 4 and 5) that elect to be seen in the GP clinic.

Currently the GP clinic is located within the hospital premises but wil be moved to the demountable when it is on site.  This is expected to be onsite and operational in early 2010.
