Ochre Recruitment has been involved with the acquirement and client placement of internal medicine jobs throughout Australia and New Zealand for well over ten years. With our experience and knowledge of medical recruitment in Australia and New Zealand, we are readily able to find positions for specialist physicians such as paediatricians, cardiologists, oncologists and other specialties.

The specialist qualification for Australia and New Zealand is the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), who maintain standards of practice for the qualifying and accreditation of physicians.

RACP is the authority on professional standards determining if the training and experience of an Overseas Trained Physicians (OTP) is “substantially comparable,” “partially comparable,” or “not comparable” to that of an Australian-trained physician/paediatrician.

OTP’s who hold qualifications which allow recognition as a specialist in their country of training are eligible to apply for specialist assessment in their recognised subspecialty. All candidates are assessed individually, the college will do a preliminary review and if unlikely that the candidate will be found substantially comparable the OTD will be notified.

A candidate may be assessed as substantially comparable to an Australian-trained physician/paediatrician:

  • If he/she has undergone training in a system similar to that of Australia, including a period of general medical training (i.e. in Basic Training), followed by examination and an advanced training period in a subspecialty.
  • If that training has been overseen by a body similar to the RACP,
  • If the duration of experience at specialist level is significant, with specialty practice in the area he/she is to be assessed in,
  • If that experience is with a case load and clinical duties similar to that of an Australian-trained physician/paediatrician.

Most applicants with substantially comparable training and experience will be required to undertake a period of satisfactory Professional Practice under Peer Review for a period of 12 months.

An OTP is deemed to be partially comparable to an Australian-trained physician/paediatrician if he/she is likely to be equivalent within 24 months. The recommendation from assessment may include top up training, examinations, and peer review.

When an applicant’s training and experience is not comparable to that of an Australian-trained physician/paediatrician the college may recommend the applicant to complete the AMC examinations and apply to join the RACP physician training programs.
